Pat was in locker room as the four wrestlers escorted the two badly beaten HW inside.
He wondered if anything had been resolved or if the animosity would continue.
Cody and Dane sat on opposite benches. Their eyes bore hard into each other. Roby, Jake, Doug and Ryan headed out. They knew if Cody and Dane wanted to continue the match nothing would stop them.
Pat walked over to check on Dane. Dane was sitting. Cody was leaning against the wall on the opposite bench. Dane said, "Cody, why?"
"Why what?" Cody asked.
"Why did we let something come between us?" Dane blurted out.
Cody shrugged. He said, "I don't know. Maybe it was time for me to kick your ass." Cody replied but only half heartedly meant it.
Dane shook his head, "I don't think that's it. We were friends a long time, you and me. Why did you leave me in the ring in that tag match? And why did you tell Rob I badmouthed you?"
Cody moved over and sat down beside Dane. He gave Pat a look and Pat nodded. "I'll let you two talk this out. But you guys listen to each other and don't hold anything back. Okay?"
Both Cody and Dane nodded.
Pat left the room. Cody said, "Dane, I am sorry for leaving you in the ring. That was unforgivable. You don't have any idea how much I regret that. But I was so pissed. After what you said about not needing me to the other guys, I felt like crap. I still can't get past the fact that you would say that. We were the tag champs! If you thought I was the weak link, tell me to my face. But to laugh about me being useless behind my back in front of my friends. F*** man. It hurt. A lot."
Dane was shocked. "Cody, I never believed you were the weak link. Where is this coming from? When did I say this"
Cody told Dane when and where. Dane couldn't even remember but he knew he must have been joking. He told
Cody as much.
Dane and Cody sat silently beside each other for 15 minutes, neither making a move, neither saying anything. Cody bowed his head between his legs. His body convulsed as though he was going to throw up.
Dane asked, "Are you okay?"
Cody lifted his head, "I should be asking you that, I mean shit Dane we were best friends since we were 8 and we stood out in that ring and tried to kill each other.."
Dane ignored Cody's comment, "Cody, are YOU okay?"
Cody said, "No, no I'm not okay. I threw away something so important over a misunderstanding. I feel like puking. I am such a moron. I am so sorry, Dane."
Dane said, "We can always get our titles back Cody."
Cody said, "You think I'm talking about the titles? Have I sunk that low in your mind? I don't give a flying f*** about the titles. I am talking about throwing away my best friend. The guy I trusted over all others to watch my back. I'm talking about that."
Cody said, "I've done some heinous things, buddy. To you, to other guys, like Stan. I've done way too much to be repaired. But I am glad you know how sorry I am. This is all my fault. I should go."
Cody started to move to go.
"I should go."
Dane grabbed Cody's arm and held him seated on the bench. Dane said, "Not before I apologize, too. Cody, I am sorry. I am sorry I ever made you feel like this. I'm sorry I ever called you the weak link, even as a joke. And I'm sorry I didn't work harder to find out why you did it. I always thought there was a reason."
Cody and Dane held each other's stare for a few minutes.
Cody felt the queasy feeling starting to leave. It felt good to sit and talk with his buddy. Now they had everything out in the open.
"That still doesn't explain you attacking me before my match with Roby. That was low."
Dane shook his head, "No it doesn't. Guess we chalk that up to jealousy. You had something I wanted, but wasn't good enough to get. But then again when we had the tag team titles they caused us nothing but grief."
Dane knew it was a lame explanation, but maybe some day he would tell Cody who was behind the attack. Just not now. They needed to get themselves straightened out first.
Dane said, "What are you doing tomorrow? I'm checking out used cars."
Cody looked astonished. He said, "You're finally getting wheels?"
Dane nodded. "Yep, finally saved up the cash. Want to help me look. We can talk some more. Outside of here. Outside the gym and TW."
Cody nodded. The boys made plans together for the first time in months. As they talked, Myca came skipping up. The young boy forced his way between them. Cody and Dane did not move, effectively crushing young Myca between them. Despite this, Myca didn't seem to mind at all.
Myca said, "So are we friends again?"
Cody said, "Too early to tell but I think signs are promising." Dane just smiled. Cody said, "Thank you Myca."
Myca just shrugged and said, "Bye. Glad to see you guys together again. If you ever want a match, let me know!" He stood up and walked away.
Dane said, "A match with him and one of us? Is he nuts?"
Cody smiled. He said, "I think he meant a match between him and both of us. That kid'll take us on in a handicap match if we ask him to."
The boys sat in silence again. Cody got up and said "See you tomorrow."
Cody and Dane shook hands. It was the first time in months for that either.
Both knew they had a long way to go to rebuild what they once had.
Both grabbed a shower then Cody offered Dane a ride home.
Pat watched them go. He had waited outside the locker room in case the two teens had come to blows.
